Accelerator based techniques for aerosol analysis

Franco Lucarelli, Physics and Astronomy Department, University of Florence and INFN, Florence, Italy

At the 3 MV Tandetron accelerator of the LABEC laboratory of INFN (Florence, Italy) an external beam facility is fully dedicated to PIXE-PIGE measurements of elemental composition of atmospheric aerosols. Examples regarding recent monitoring campaigns, performed in urban and remote areas, both on a daily basis and with high time resolution, as well as with size selection, will be presented. It will be evidenced how PIXE can provide unique information in aerosol studies or can play a complementary role to traditional chemical analysis. Finally a short presentation of 14C analysis of the atmospheric aerosol by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) for the evaluation of the contributions from either fossil fuel combustion or modern sources (wood burning, biogenic activity) will be given.
