Natural Occurring Radioactive Material for Building (NORM4BUILDING)

Harry Friedmann, Fakultät für Physik – Isotopenforschung und Kernphysik, Universität Wien

Every year millions of tons of material with an enhanced concentration of natural radioactivity are produced as residues or wastes by industrial processes, being usually deposited more or less secure somewhere in the environment. A new strategy came up with the EU Directive 2008/98/EC. The directive lays down some basic waste management principles: it requires that waste be managed without endangering human health and harming the environment, and in particular without risk to water, air, soil, plants or animals. With this goal in mind the COST action NORM4BUILDING was started. COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is the longest-running European framework supporting trans-national cooperation among researchers, engineers and scholars across Europe. The NORM4BUILDING project brings together 100 scientists from 25 countries, which work on developing strategies to use NORM as building material.

The talk will give an overview on the background and the current activities of the project.
